#KeepBreathing Emergency Ventilator Fundraiser Reaches Initial Funding Target Within 50 Hours
Updated: Apr 7, 2020
The team behind the #KeepBreathing project has said it is “overwhelmed” by the level of public support for its GoFundMe fundraiser, which surpassed over €50,000 before 9AM on Friday the 20th of March.
“The generosity of the public in supporting our research has been truly humbling,” said Aaron Hannon, spokesperson for CRT, and Research Fellow at the School of Medicine, NUI Galway. “This outpouring of support will allow us to instantly get to work in prototyping our designs and getting emergency ventilators closer to patient use.”
The COVID Response Team (CRT) is a non-profit group of engineers, researchers, doctors and innovators developing an open-source, easy to manufacture and low-cost emergency ventilator system to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic. Working remotely from Tipperary, Clare, Galway, Cork, Limerick and Belfast, the team has rapidly developed creative solutions which can be further developed to provide ventilation equipment to hospitals around the world.
Prototyping and testing of solutions is currently underway at the team’s prototyping lab in Limerick. Early results are expected to be published by the end of March.
The team have been inundated with offers of support from firms and individuals of all backgrounds. Hannon explains that the team are working to respond to each request – “We are incredibly grateful for the many offers of support thus far. We ask that people contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can respond as quickly as possible”.
The team recognises the efforts of other open source groups working around the world to solve issues arising from the pandemic. We look forward to remaining in contact with these groups in a spirit of collaboration. In the event of surplus resource when the COVID19 crisis passes, all remaining funds will be donated to a variety of charities who have been affected by the pandemic.
